We added a detail to how GPTpost schedules Bluesky posts that we think more tools should do by default: each of the up to four images in a post has its own alt text field, filled in when the post is written and visible during approval.
The reasoning: when people publish by hand at the last minute, the description is the first thing to go. When it is written days earlier, next to the text, it gets the same attention as the copy.
A few rules we follow ourselves:
- Describe what matters for the post, not every pixel
- Put any text that appears in the image into the alt text
- One or two sentences is usually enough
For people who schedule image posts on Bluesky or Mastodon: do you write descriptions at drafting time, or at publishing time? And has anyone made alt text a required step in their review process?
